Paying someone to build a website: what the money should buy

When you pay someone to build a website, the price should cover more than the pages. Before you agree to any quote, check that it includes all of these, in writing:

• A written scope and estimate. Which pages, which features, how many rounds of changes.
• Design that is yours, not a reskinned template. Ask to see the homepage before you pay the bulk of the fee. We design yours free first.
• The basics of being found. Page titles, structured data, a sitemap, mobile speed and Google Business Profile setup.
• The code, domain and hosting in your name. Otherwise you are renting the site, not buying it.
• Support after launch. Who fixes a broken form in month three, and what it costs.

If a quote leaves any of these out, it is not cheaper; the cost has just moved to later.

The single biggest cause of a website project going over time and over budget is not the developer. It is starting without knowing what the site is for. Half an hour on this list will save you weeks:

1. One sentence on what the site must do. Get enquiries, take bookings, sell products, or be somewhere credible to send people. These lead to different builds.
2. Your page list. Home, About, Services, Contact is four. Every service on its own page is more. Page count is what most website estimates are based on, including ours.
3. Who writes the words. The most common reason a build stalls is waiting on content from the client. Decide upfront whether that is you or the developer.
4. Photos. Real photos of your work, premises or team beat stock every time. If you do not have them, budget for a photographer or say so early.
5. Anything it has to connect to. Booking system, payment gateway, CRM, accounting software. These change the quote and are expensive to bolt on afterwards.

What to check before you pay a deposit

• Ask who owns the code. Get it in writing. If the answer is vague, or the site only works on their hosting, you are renting.
• Open two of their past sites on your phone. Not the portfolio screenshots — the live sites. Most Australian traffic is mobile and this takes thirty seconds.
• Ask what happens after launch. Who fixes a broken form in month three, and at what price.
• Ask for a written estimate and scope. An hourly estimate with no cap is not a quote.
• Check they will still be contactable. A marketplace account that goes quiet is a real risk and the platform will not rebuild your site for you.
