Comparison

Webflow vs a Custom Website in Australia

Webflow is the best visual website builder available, and it produces genuinely good output. The trade-off is a monthly fee that never stops and a ceiling you eventually hit. This page explains where that ceiling sits.

Credit where it is due

Webflow is a serious tool. It outputs clean semantic HTML, its hosting is fast, and a skilled Webflow designer can build something that performs well and looks excellent. Compared with Wix, it is a different class of product. If someone tells you Webflow is a toy, they have not used it.

So the comparison here is not about quality. It is about cost structure, ownership, and what happens when you need something Webflow does not do.

The five-year cost, in AUD

Five-year total$3,380–7,940$1,900

The platform fee is the whole argument. It is modest monthly and substantial over five years, and it buys you nothing permanent — stop paying and the site goes offline.

The export limitation people discover late

Webflow lets you export your code, which sounds like it solves the ownership problem. It does not, quite. The export gives you static HTML and CSS. It does not include the CMS, form handling, memberships, ecommerce, or any dynamic functionality. If your site uses Webflow CMS collections — and most do — an export leaves you with a shell.

This matters at exactly the moment it is most inconvenient: when you have outgrown the platform and want to move.

Where Webflow hits its ceiling

  • Custom backend logic. Anything requiring server-side processing, complex calculations, or a real database beyond CMS collections.
  • Integrations outside the ecosystem. Connecting to an industry-specific booking system, an ERP, or a bespoke API usually means workarounds.
  • Ecommerce at scale. Webflow Ecommerce is capable but limited on product variants, tax logic and fulfilment integrations.
  • User accounts and dashboards. Memberships exist but are shallow. Anything resembling a real application belongs elsewhere.

If your website will only ever be a website, none of that matters. If it is heading toward being a store or an application, the ceiling arrives sooner than expected.

When Webflow is the right call

If you want to edit your own site visually, your needs are presentational rather than functional, and a monthly fee is acceptable to you — Webflow is a good choice and we will say so. Design-led businesses that redesign often get real value from it.

When custom is the right call

If you want the fees to stop, you want the actual code, or you can see functionality on the horizon that a visual builder will not reach — build custom. Our fixed prices are on the pricing page.

Common questions

Is Webflow good for SEO?

Yes — genuinely. Webflow outputs clean semantic HTML, lets you control meta tags and canonical URLs, and generates a sitemap. It is one of the better builders for SEO. A custom build gives you more control over structured data and page-level performance, but Webflow is not an SEO problem the way some builders are.

Can I export my Webflow site and host it elsewhere?

Partially. You can export static HTML and CSS, but the export excludes CMS collections, forms, memberships and ecommerce. For a purely static brochure site the export is usable. For anything using Webflow CMS, you are effectively rebuilding.

How much does Webflow cost in Australia?

Site plans run roughly $23–49 AUD per month depending on tier, with ecommerce plans higher. Over five years that is approximately $1,380–2,940 in platform fees on top of whatever the initial build cost, and the fee never ends.

Can you migrate a Webflow site to a custom build?

Yes. We rebuild the design faithfully, keep your URL structure so rankings carry over, set up redirects for anything that changes, and hand you the full repository. Most migrations take two to four weeks.
