Why broad city terms are unwinnable for most tradies
Search for "plumber Melbourne" and the first page is almost entirely directories: Hipages, ServiceSeeking, Yellow Pages, Bark.com. These platforms have thousands of backlinks, millions of pages, and years of domain authority. A sole-trader plumbing website has no realistic path to position one for this term.
This is not a reason to give up on SEO — it is a reason to stop targeting the wrong keywords. The suburbs are where the opportunity is.
What suburb pages are and how they work
A suburb page is a dedicated page on your website targeting a specific suburb you service. "Plumber Moonee Ponds" is an example — its own URL (/plumber-moonee-ponds/), its own title tag, its own content. When someone searches "plumber moonee ponds," Google looks for the most relevant page. A dedicated page from a real local business often ranks above a directory listing because Google favours local businesses with verified addresses for local intent searches.
Real keyword data — the volume is there
200 searches per month at position 1 with a 30% click-through rate = 60 visitors. A call-out worth $250–$800 converting at 5% = 3 jobs per month from one suburb page. Build 10 suburb pages and the maths compounds.

What a suburb page needs to rank
- URL:
/plumber-moonee-ponds/— the keyword in the URL. - Title tag: "Plumber Moonee Ponds | [Business Name]" — exact keyword first.
- H1: "Plumber in Moonee Ponds" — exact keyword, no clever rewording.
- Suburb-specific copy: Mention the suburb at least 4–5 times naturally. Reference local landmarks or nearby areas you also service.
- Click-to-call button: Mobile-first — the majority of tradie searches happen on mobile.
- Internal links: Link from the suburb page to your main services page and between adjacent suburbs.
- LocalBusiness schema: With your address, service area including the suburb, and opening hours.
How many suburb pages should you build?
Start with 5–10 suburbs where you do the most work. Pages need to be genuinely different — Google's scaled content abuse system detects near-identical pages with just the suburb name swapped and penalises the site.
Genuine differentiation: different opening paragraphs, references to different local context, different service emphasis based on what that suburb needs (older homes in Brunswick need different plumbing services than new builds in Craigieburn).

Frequently asked questions
How many suburb pages do I need?
Start with 5–10 suburbs where you already do most of your work. Each page must have genuinely unique content — not a template with the suburb name swapped. Once those pages are indexed and ranking, add more based on where you want to grow.
Are suburb pages worth it for a small tradie business?
Yes — they are the fastest SEO win available for local trades because competition on suburb-specific terms is low. A single suburb page at position 1 generating 3–5 leads per month can pay for your entire website within the first quarter.
Won't Google penalise me for lots of similar pages?
Only if the pages are near-identical. Each page needs unique content: different local references, different opening paragraph, different service emphasis. 10 pages that are genuinely different are fine. 50 pages that are identical except for the suburb name are a risk.
